Recycling – Are you doing your part?

June 27, 2010

By now we are all familiar with this symbol.

“We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to.”  – Terri Swearingen

We all recycle bottles, cans and newspapers (for the most part).  It’s the law in most towns and cities.  Now many of us bring our own bags when we go to the supermarket.  Schools and businesses promote that they are “Going Green”.  Can we take it a step further?
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (2010),  between 1960 and 2008 the amount of waste each person creates has almost doubled from 2.7 to 4.5 pounds per day.  The numbers are astounding.  Although we are thinking “greener” than lets say ten years ago, there are many ways we can do more.

Here are a few tips:

Tip #1:  Buy products with recycled content.  When buying office or school supplies, look for notebooks and folders made with recycled material.  I recently bought a notebook made with 100% recycled material and banana peels.  It’s great.

Tip #2:  Buy reusable sandwich and snack bags.  I found an awesome website,

Tip #3:  This is my favorite.  Sign up on .  You can post items that you don’t want or  need and others in your local area reply if they want it.  The pick-up is prompt and it’s gone.  For those of you selling your house, this is great.  My local neighbors can go to FreeCycle Orange County, NY or FreeCycle Rockland County, NY.

Tip #4:  If you don’t already, start recycling at work.  Bring in two bins, one for bottles and plastic and the other for paper.  You will be amazed at how contagious recycling is.  I guarantee others will use the bins once they are visible.

Through the years it is so nice to hear from all of you about your families and updates you have made to your homes.  As always I appreciate the referrals too.

Please share any recycling ideas you use in your house or if you come across and good recycling products or websites I’d love to hear from you.  Post a comment in the space below.

From my home to yours, have a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!
